What the job involves
A DevOps engineer connects development and operations: they set up automatic building and checking of code, deployment of applications on servers and in the cloud, and monitoring of their condition. They describe infrastructure as code, configure containers, look after security and respond quickly to failures. The goal is for a team to release updates often without the risk of taking the service down.
Skills you need
- Linux and the command line
- networking: IP, DNS, HTTP, security basics
- containers such as Docker, and an introduction to Kubernetes
- continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) systems
- cloud platforms and infrastructure as code
- scripting in Bash or Python
- Git and monitoring: metrics, logs, alerts
- calm, systematic thinking during outages
How to start and learn
Start with Linux, networking and Git, then learn to package applications into containers and set up automated builds. Run a small service of your own on a server or in the cloud and describe its setup with scripts. The course assumes some basic knowledge of IT and programming, so a complete beginner should first learn the fundamentals. A good entry point into the profession is a system administrator, junior DevOps or infrastructure support position.
Where they work
In Armenia DevOps engineers work in outsourcing companies and international teams with offices in Yerevan, in banks and fintech companies, in product startups and as freelancers. Demand comes from the fact that almost every online service needs stable infrastructure.
