What a financial analyst does

A financial analyst collects and analyzes a company's financial data: revenue, expenses, cash flow and profitability. They build budgets and forecasts, compare actual results with the plan, explain the reasons for deviations and prepare reports for management. Their conclusions influence decisions on pricing, investment and cost cutting.

Skills you need

  • understanding of finance and accounting basics
  • confident work in Excel or another spreadsheet tool
  • the ability to draw conclusions from numbers and explain them simply
  • accuracy and attention to detail
  • business logic: behind the numbers there are always processes
  • data visualization and basic analytical tools

How to start and learn

Start with the fundamentals of financial accounting: the structure of financial statements and how to read them. Then learn budgeting, financial modeling and Excel. The best practice is to build a model from real or training company data. Many people come from accounting, economics or sales analytics and then move into an analytical role. A degree in economics or finance helps, but practical skills matter most.

To begin, it is useful to pick one small company or even a personal budget and go through the full cycle: collecting data, calculating indicators, explaining deviations and drawing conclusions. Such an example shows an employer how you think better than any résumé. Later, more complex topics are added: scenario planning, project evaluation and profitability analysis by business line.
