What an HR specialist does

An HR specialist works in one or more areas of people management: recruiting, onboarding new employees, personnel records, training and development, and employee communication. In a small company one person may do all of it; in a larger one the areas are split. HR finds people, helps them stay with the company and work effectively.

Skills you need

  • communication and listening
  • conducting interviews and assessing candidates
  • organization and attention to documents
  • confidentiality, since you work with people's personal data
  • empathy and fairness in every situation
  • understanding of labor law basics
  • flexibility and resilience under stress

How to start and learn

Start with HR fundamentals: recruiting, onboarding, motivation and personnel records. Try to take part in real processes: conduct interviews, write job descriptions and draft an onboarding plan. Many people start as an assistant or recruiter and then widen their responsibilities.

Learn also to write a clear job description and to give feedback to candidates, even when rejecting them. This builds the company's reputation. Remember that HR work is continuous: the first months of onboarding, development conversations and studying reasons for leaving matter as much as finding a new person.

Where HR specialists work in Armenia

HR specialists are needed in almost any company with a number of employees. Especially in IT companies and startups, banks, trading and manufacturing companies, and staffing and recruitment agencies. Freelance recruiting is also possible. Growth paths include senior HR specialist, HR manager and head of HR. The choice of direction depends on your interests, and many specialists try several roles before finding the right one. It is important to keep learning and to document your experience.
