What the work involves
A web designer designs the look of websites, landing pages and online stores. They decide on page structure, block layout, color schemes, fonts and imagery. Mockups are prepared for desktop, tablet and phone screens. The finished design is handed to a developer or built in a site builder (such as Tilda or WordPress) when a project does not need custom code.
Designing a website usually begins with clarifying the goal: what the visitor should do, whether buying, leaving a request or reading an article. The page layout and the design are built around that. A web designer also considers loading speed, image size and usability on a phone, because a large share of websites today are opened on mobile devices.
Skills you need
- Design tools: Figma, often Photoshop or Illustrator as well.
- Knowledge of typography, color combinations and composition.
- Responsive design principles.
- Understanding of HTML and CSS basics, so the design can actually be built.
- Attention to detail and the ability to listen to what the client wants.
How to start and learn
Start with design basics: composition, color, type. Then learn Figma, try recreating pages of existing sites, and afterwards design your own. Get familiar with HTML/CSS basics and one site builder. A portfolio should show not only the final look but also your approach: what the task was and how you solved it. First orders often come through freelancing or small agencies.
Where they work
In Armenia, web designers work in digital agencies, studios, startups, IT companies and in-house marketing teams. Freelancing is also common: designers build sites for local businesses and clients abroad.
